Nurturing the genius of children & youth and creating a transformative life experience.
Mentors of Minorities in Education, Inc. (M.O.M.I.E, Inc.), is a DC-based nonprofit organization dedicated to “nurturing the genius” of our children by creating a transformative educational experience. Our model uniquely integrates creative and culturally relevant out-of-school time programs, opportunities for parent and community engagement, and the sharing of educational tools and resources for the community.
Our purpose is to transform education for at-risk children of color through an educational model that uses social justice and cultural education as the foundation for improving academic outcomes for our children. M.O.M.I.E's dynamic, humanities and culture-based learning programs directly respond to the tremendous need for nontraditional learning opportunities for low-income children living in Washington, DC and Maryland. M.O.M.I.E’s strategic focus on the early childhood and school-age years reinforce our learning philosophy, which is grounded in the belief that children develop at a tremendous rate during their first years of life, and that providing humanities and culture-based education, opportunities, and services during the preschool and elementary years fosters health, positive growth, and long-term self-sufficiency.

M.O.M.I.E's vision is to cultivate our children and youth to become future leaders and agents of social change by broadening their social consciousness and awareness, and developing critical competencies that enable them to succeed in school, college, and beyond. We seek to tap into and unleash the "genius" that lies within our children and youth and implement an educational model that can be replicated locally, nationally, and globally.
Academic
Development
Our out-of-school time programs are designed from the philosophy that there is genius in every child eagerly awaiting to burst out and be nurtured! Our curriculum has been intentionally developed and crafted for nearly 2 decades, utilizing project-based, hands-on, fun and engaging learning activities that gives the learner the opportunity to have input on their environmental and developmental outcomes in the following. Learners receive homework assistance and tutoring services across various subjects.
Cultural
Empowerment
Research supports the use of culturally affirming history to build confidence, promote academic/life achievement and boosts resiliency. We have implemented our Great Persons Series (GPS) as a tool for empowerment and social change. The GPS is a White House Award Winning humanities and arts-based curriculum which seeks to highlight marginalized and/or minority persons and themes in history and culture. Through an interdisciplinary approach of developmentally appropriate lessons, program participants continue towards a path of career & college readiness as they are immersed across several subject areas, such as English Language Arts, History and S.T.E.A.M.
Family
Strengthening
To serve the immense need for holistic and individualized opportunities and supports that engages parents and caregivers, M.O.M.I.E’s utilizes a combination of authentic relationship building, workshops, seminars, and the integration of family history/stories into our program curricula. As dedicated liaisons, we work to strengthen families by equipping them with the resources and tools needed to foster and improve their overall life opportunities.
Life
Academy
As mentors, we dedicate our time to guide, teach, coach, help and advise our young people; by connecting them to opportunities, supports, and services that will help them create their own career path. We also provide guidance, motivation, emotional support, and role modeling.
Our Life Academy give students the option to choose a path for their life opportunities! We give the students the choice in gaining entry to intermediate level skills training in their area of interest from industry experts. Our staff and partners have an array of knowledge, skills, and expertise and the students will be immersed in hands-on learning and workshops in their area of interest, i.e. culinary arts, graphic designs, photography, dance, entrepreneurial ventures, coding, and more.
